Born in 1991 in Madrid, Sofia Masini lives and works in Milan. She holds a BA in Cultural Heritage from the University of Milan and a Master’s degree in Photography from IUAV University of Venice. Her artistic research is centered on the body, explored both as a heuristic tool and as a space of knowledge, perception and transformation. Through photography, Masini investigates the relationship between the human figure and the surrounding landscape, using the image as a way to reconnect the body with the world.

Her practice often develops through a process of deconstruction and recomposition. In her ongoing project The body is a revelation as is landscape, begun in 2019, Masini works with self portraits and landscape photographs from her own archive, cutting, fragmenting and reassembling them into new visual configurations. The resulting images challenge conventional representations of the body, allowing it to become fluid, fragmented and interconnected with its environment. Her work has been presented in independent spaces and institutions in Italy and abroad, including the MAR Museum in Ravenna, Preus Museum in Norway, the National Museum of Photography in Denmark and Kunsthalle Darmstadt. Her work is also part of the Collezione Donata Pizzi.

I photographs the things that are felt long before they are understood

In 2023, Witty Books published Masini’s first photobook, The body is a revelation as is landscape, a visual exploration of the shifting relationship between body and landscape through photography, collage and processes of transformation. The publication was shortlisted for the Photo España Book Award and Les Rencontres d’Arles Book Awards, and was presented in the context of the Singapore International Photography Festival. Masini’s practice continues to evolve through an intuitive and materially engaged approach to image making, in which photography becomes both a method of observation and a space for questioning how we perceive ourselves, our bodies and the world around us.
